The market reacted immediately—AAVE jumped 12% within hours. But the signal is not the price. The signal is a structural shift in how a DeFi protocol distributes its surplus. Aave is the largest decentralized lending market. Its token, AAVE, has historically been a governance token with weak value capture. The previous buyback mechanism was discretionary, controlled by a multi-sig committee. This created uncertainty: would they buy? When? At what price? The new proposal eliminates that discretion entirely. The smart contract will execute buybacks based on predefined rules. The revenue source: every basis point of interest from lending, every fee from GHO minting, flows back into AAVE repurchases. This is not a new idea—MakerDAO and others have done buybacks—but the commitment to automation and full revenue allocation is unprecedented for Aave. Data indicates that Aave's annualized protocol revenue exceeds $80 million, with GHO contributing roughly 15% of that.
